07/13/2017 - Volleyball Factory Select Summer Training Camp at Lake Placid - Sophia Payne is a 2018 middle blocker. She has a good a quick jump allowing her to get up for a quick set in the middle. Her arm swing is fast and has good arm power. She also is able to hit varied shots helping her be more successful and versatile in the middle. She is a hard worker and continues to work on stay off the net on her attacks - due to her approach and timing she often ends up to tight to the net which doesn't allow her to open to the setter and get a good swing. Over the four days we did see improve in this area as she tried hard to work on her spacing. As a blocker Sophia is a good blocker - she takes up space on the net and got touches on majority of balls that came across the net making it difficult for the attacker to score. She continues to work on being a more effective blocker by focusing on penetrating over the net - when she does this correctly she sets up a great block. Sophia has a jump float serve that has good speed on it making it difficult to pass. With Sophia entering her senior are we are excited and anxious to see what schools he will commit to as we know she will be a good addition.
